For hiring teams

Hiring a FinOps Analyst?

Your team is hiring; I run the technical round for you. One 60-minute live interview per candidate, with a scored written recommendation back within 12 hours.

About the role — Reduces cloud spend without reducing reliability. Needs engineering credibility.

What you get

A 60-minute live interview with a scored written recommendation back within 12 hours. No retainer; fee quoted on the scoping call.

01 — Why this role is hard to assess

A FinOps hire who cannot read an architecture will propose savings engineers reject, and lose credibility permanently. The interview has to test both the finance literacy and the engineering judgement.

02 — What the 60 minutes covers

The specific ground, not a generic checklist.

  1. Reserved Instances versus Savings Plans versus Spot for a described workload
  2. Allocating shared costs across teams fairly enough that they accept it
  3. A saving they recommended and an engineering team rejected — and what happened
  4. Where cutting cost would have been the wrong call

03 — A scenario from the round

Spend grew 30% last quarter while traffic stayed flat. You have read-only access and one week. What do you look at, and what do you bring back?

Scenarios rotate between candidates so the round stays fair, and none of the published examples are used verbatim.

What I listen for

Failure modes specific to this role

  • Proposes rightsizing without understanding the workload pattern
  • Treats every idle resource as waste
  • Cannot model a commitment decision end to end
  • No answer for when cost reduction should be refused

Scored on

  1. Commitment modelling
  2. Architecture literacy
  3. Allocation fairness
  4. Engineering credibility
  5. Prioritisation

Each dimension is scored with written rationale. You get the reasoning, not just the number.
