# Edge computing and 5G will significantly improve cloud gaming performance

5G and edge computing will have a major positive impact on cloud gaming in the following ways:

Lower latency: By locating cloud gaming servers closer to users at the edge of the network, latency can be reduced from tens of milliseconds to just a few milliseconds. This will improve the responsiveness of cloud games.

Higher bandwidth: 5G’s significantly higher bandwidth compared to 4G will allow for more data-intensive cloud games with higher resolutions, frame rates, and graphics quality.

More stable experience: Edge servers will be able to dynamically adapt game streams based on real-time network conditions, resulting in a more consistent cloud gaming experience.

Multi-access edge computing: Using multi-access edge computing (MEC), cloud gaming providers will be able to deploy applications and content at multiple network edges. This will improve coverage and availability.

Location-based features: The ultra-low latency of edge computing and 5G will enable new location-based features in cloud games that rely on precise, real-time data from a player’s device.

Improved multiplayer gaming: Edge computing will allow for real-time synchronization of game states across players with reduced latency, improving the multiplayer cloud gaming experience.

In summary, edge computing and 5G working together have the potential to transform cloud gaming by drastically reducing latency, increasing bandwidth, and providing a more consistent and feature-rich experience. This will help overcome some of the current limitations of cloud gaming and make it a viable mainstream gaming option.

The key will be cloud gaming providers deploying their applications and servers at the edge of 5G networks to take full advantage of the benefits of low latency, high bandwidth and responsiveness that edge computing can provide – especially for latency-sensitive applications like games.
